Highlights of Rio de Janeiro in November Part II

On November 19th, Rio de Janeiro celebrates “Flag Day”. The hymn that glorifies the Brazilian flag was composed by Francisco Braga and the lyrics were written by Olavo Bilac. It was presented for the very first time in 1907 at the Benjamim Constant School and since then every November 19th, Brazil celebrates Flag Day. The flag symbolizes respect for the Brazilian history as well as the Brazilian patriotism and traditions. The venues for Flag Day are the Copacabana Fort, Monument to the Dead of World War II and at the Brigadeiro Eduardo Gomes Park.

For music fans, the University Bands Festival – MTV is being held at Marina da Glória – Av. Infante Dom Henrique s/nº – Glória. The festival presents the newest and most promising musical talents and promises to be the place where all folk fans should be. The Gloria Marina will be the home of bars, dance floors, DJs, shows, games and many more.

One of the biggest events in November that will continue in December is the Christmas Festival that is considered the world’s largest contemporary street art event. This is the place where artisans, architects, creation artists, visual designers, fashion designers, carnival professionals will present in a very unique method the 50 best natural size nativity scenes handpicked by the Rio de Janeiro Federal University School of Fine Arts. These scenes will be exhibited at shopping centers, airports, public squares and at the most popular areas of Rio de Janeiro. On the last day of the exhibition all of them will be auctioned and sold. The earnings will go to a social welfare project managed by the State of Rio de Janeiro Social Welfare – Rio Solidário.

Another great event in November is “Nescau Energy Street Festival / Street Skate World Championship”. This is the event where 42 skaters will gather from several countries like Brazil, USA, Canada, Belgium, Argentina and Germany in order to show their skills on a park assembled at Copacabana beach. The venue for this event will be the Copacabana beach – next to Av. Princesa Isabel.

A second Christmas-related event will be the “Christmas Art” which in 2009 will reach the fourth edition. The fair will offer many options for choosing the right Christmas present. The event will gather 60 craftspeople from all corners of the world that will exhibit their work – from patchwork to biscuit pottery and objects made from wood to embroidery. The venue for this event is Clube Monte Líbano – Av. Borges de Medeiros, 701 – Lagoa.

On November 29, the “Disney Magic Moments Parade” will be held. The parade will consist of seven thematic and complex floats, 4 mini-cars, eight vehicles that will cross a 4 km section of street at the famous Copacabana beach – starting at Posto 6 and ending at Leme. The seven different themes are The Little Mermaid, Toy Story and the Princesses, Mickey Mouse and Friends, Fairies, Beauty and the Beast, Winnie the Pooh, The Lion King and Zé Carioca. The venue for this fun event is Praia de Copacabana – Av. Atlântica, início do Posto Seis até o Leme – Copacabana.
